Women in Action Every Day
Under the slogan SPEAK UP! SPEAK OUT! TAKE ACTION!, The Women’s Circle is participating in the national wide campaign of 16 Days of Activism for no Violence against Women and Children, in collaboration with its Learning Circles and community based circle organizations.
From the 25th of November until the 10th of December 2013, the aim is to build capacities of community members and victims of abuse and to rise awareness around the alarmingly high number of incidences of violence against women, children and the elderly.
During the 16 days, the six communities of Lavender Hill, Parkwood Estate, Statice Heights, Philippi, Kayelitsha and Delft will host various organizations and organize different activities, such as workshops and information sessions. These will provide information and build capacities to improve the ability of victims of abuse to act, as well as other community or family members to be able to help and assist.
Furthermore, The Women’s Circle will be working together with Epilepsy SA (Cape Town) and the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate. These partnerships will serve to further accomplish the objectives of preventing future violence and building a network of individuals and organizations committed to creating a community free of violence against women and children.
Even though the Women’s Circle and its affiliated circles and organizations are working on awareness rising and building capacities every day of the year, this campaign is an opportunity to provide access to information and education to the broader community. It increases the ability of women and men to engage and pathways can be created that will draw resources into the communities.
On a personal level, women and men can build confidence and practice skills throughout the campaign, so that in the future they can engage more in individual and community action.
Come and join us, let’s be active together! You will find different activities each day and plenty of possibilities to continue your engagement after the campaign. Bring your children, husbands, neighbours and friends – everybody is welcome!
